The gifts were a great success, not only with the chefs but also at Harvey Nichols, where Ms Ducas took a few extra pairs one lunchtime. “They liked them links of london,” she says. “But they needed a range, not just one kind. I went back two weeks later with a collection.”

 But life became complicated for the young Ms Ducas. Her mother died suddenly and she inherited the fish business.

 ”I took over the company from one day to the next Links of London Rings, not knowing a cod from a halibut. It was a big learning curve,” she says.

 Around the same time, Ms Ducas and her new husband, John Ayton, began to expand the corporate gift side of the fledgling jewellery business. They had met in Hong Kong, where Mr Ayton was a lawyer. Before long, Links of London Bracelets became a permanent job and Ms Ducas gave up the fish business. Mr Ayton took a full-time role three years ago.

 One of their first customers was Veuve Clicquot, for whom Ms Ducas designed a miniature silver champagne bottle with a cork. By 1995, she was the runner-up for the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year Award. There has been much public recognition and many coveted prizes and commissions. Links of London Bangles holds the licence for silver giftware from the All England Club, Wimbledon. Last year, the company produced a life-size silver rugby ball for the winners of the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens.

Ducas oversees the design of all the collections, while Ayton handles the business operations along with Links of London Jewellery new managing director, Gareth Morris, former managing director of the English men’s wear retailer Hackett.

Links has about 1,100 products and changes about 25 percent of the assortment a year. The Madison Avenue store is projected to have first-year sales of $1.5 million to $2.3 million.

“What we do is young but it meets an awful lot of people’s needs,” Ducas said, noting Links of London Rings core customer is from 30 to 45. “We don’t do cutting-edge, trendy jewelry, which usually has to be inexpensive because its style doesn’t last very long. We are affordable and contemporary classic.”

One of Links of London Bracelets designers will transfer from the UK to New York, where he will work in the store for the next two years.

“That shows how important we believe the U.S. is,” Ducas said. “We need someone on the ground who understands what the customer wants. There is another 1,000 square feet downstairs that we will turn into an area for business gifts and for doing one-ofs for customers. We think there will be a big demand for that in New York.”

Links of London Necklaces has 11 stores in the UK — including seven in London — as well as two units in Hong Kong and a store each in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. A store in Singaporeopened in late July, to be followed by a store in Hamburg, Germany, in September.

The salespeople are well-equipped to help customers find just what they’re looking for.
